Far North Queensland

From The Red Centre we went to Far North Queensland, flew into Cairns, where we had rented a car, drove to Port Douglas (a really short ride) where we stayed at the Sheraton Mirage. If you like to be pampered, this is the place to stay. Unfortunately, the weather was stormy, with lots of rain, giving rise to flooded roads, white rivers, and impassable trails (and some adventurous roads, at least in the luxury car the gave us in Cairns). It was therefore impossible to go to the Barrier Reef.

A thunderstorm waiting..

A Holden Statesman, to which they upgraded us. Not the approriate vehicle up here.

Usually there is a hiking trail aross this river somewhere here..

Now you known how it is in the tropics.

Crossing the Daintree River on a cable ferry.

The mouth of the Daintree river.

Some impressions of the rainforest in that storm.

In the rainforest

An example of the well maintained walkways around here.

A challenge for the Statesman, probably more so for the driver.

4-miles beach with stinger warnings.

Fruit bats everywhere.

A typical stinger warning. Should probably be taken seriously, so we did not swim in the sea.

On our way to Kuranda. We did not take the antique train but used our rental.

The Barron river.

Falls of the Barron River.

Our last hours in Port Douglas. From here we drove to Cairns and flew into Sydney.
